Well, projector screens are a white surface, most TV’s will have a black plastic surrounding the screen, although some LCD monitors have a beige or silver colored frame, and theaters usually have a white screen. If you want your eyes to stay focused to the screen, I would go with a black, or dark blue color, since darker colors will absorb any ambient light. A lighter white, beige, or gray color will give the appearance that the TV’s colors are being extended beyond the screen, because lighter colors reflect ambient light.
Most people try to make their “home theater” rooms look just like a movie theater, so hanging a blue, red, or black thick velvet or felt non reflective curtain behind the TV would be really nice. Or painting the wall to LOOK like a curtain…might take a little more artistic effort, but still look just as nice. How about designing a motorized way to pull the curtain open from the middle, and then close back when you’re done watching TV!!!!!!!

Generally speaking, you will want the background to be of a contrast to the frams on the TV.

Most will have a black frame, so a light color behind it like white, beige, light blue or similar will make the picture stand out a bit more.
If you want to jazz it up, here are a few things you can try…

You can hang fabric drapes behind the tv, if it is sitting on a table. It is kind of like an old time theater look.

If it is on the wall, you can get a nice piece of laquored and finished wood (what kind depends on your bedroom furniture). You should make the back board about 3-5 inches bigger on every side of the tv. You can have it finished in a whole ton of styles to give you whatever look you are trying for. This works ESPECIALLY well if you have one of the new Philips “Ambilight” screens. It really looks like a million bucks. It is fairly easy and cheap to do too!
